LEGO Orient Expedition: Temple of Mount Everest is both a LEGO set and a game. The set includes four figures (who serve as characters in the game), an airplane, and the temple. The airplane is fairly simple to construct, and one of the figures can be set up like a pilot. The temple is a bit more difficult, but has lots of great features with swinging doors, a swiveling bridge, and skulls with orange-plastic flames. The set also includes five game board pieces, 18 playing cards, and a six-sided die. One to two players take turns moving across the board, which is constructed from thin cardboard pieces, and into the temple. Each game can be customized by setting the board up in a different way or even combining it with other LEGO sets. Detailed instructions show how to assemble the LEGO with pictures and then give the game instructions in about 20 languages. The only real drawback is that by regimenting how it should be constructed as well as how it should be played, this LEGO set seems to have missed the point–although most kids will probably soon abandon the rule book to create their own adventures. –David Morel

LEGO has been around for more than 40 years, and now the company is beginning to make its mark in the realm of video games. Building things is synonymous with the LEGO franchise, and building your vehicle with virtual LEGO bricks is quite rewarding and very easy to do in LEGO Racers.

This game allows younger gamers and LEGO fans to construct their own cars, select and customize their own drivers, and then take to one of the 25 different tracks in one of four different worlds. Hidden within each of the different tracks are some power-ups that will supercharge your car and give it a boost of power that will help you blast your way to the front of the pack. Finding the power-ups and racing against the other five drivers in this game is half the fun.

One really cool feature allows you to save your driver and car and link up via the Game Boy Color Game Link cable to battle it out against one of your pals (provided, of course, that your friend also has a copy of the game). If you want to go it alone, the five computer-controlled drivers in the game will offer up some competition, but not enough for serious racing-game fans. The AI in the game isn’t stellar, but, then again, younger gamers like to win, and this game delivers an incredible gaming experience for budding Game Boy Color enthusiasts.

The game’s graphics are on par with other Game Boy Color titles and the controls are solid. The instructions are easy to read and follow, and, as a result, the gameplay is simple.

Serious gamers who are LEGO fans might want to check this title out, but keep in mind that this is LEGO Racers were talking about, not Test Drive 6. –Todd Mowatt

Alpha Team throws puzzle after puzzle at players, and challenges them to guide a LEGO team through levels, rescue other LEGO team members, and open the level gate. The puzzles take quite a bit of thinking, and require the use of numerous devices, such as explosives and lasers.

Unfortunately, the graphics are quite small, and not very colorful–which isn’t a deal breaker, but does remove some of this title’s shine. Also, after players design a team member’s path through a level, they’re made to watch and see if their plan worked without interference.

Needless to say, this isn’t the most intense game around, but it’s a good diversion for puzzle lovers. –Robb Guido

This is one of the more bizarre Lego collections you might come across. The set re-creates the scene at the end of Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, in which the newly incarnated Darth Vader–fresh off surgery–is raised forward and revealed, strapped to a Frankenstein-like chair. Here, the swiveling seat sits atop a platform, with a battered Anakin Skywalker on one side and Vader on the other. A five-armed, robotic surgeon stands nearby. The whole thing can be reassembled into a turret manned by the evil Sith Lord himself. The 53 pieces are all tiny; little Lego Darth is as cute as a button. Take a Wild, Imaginative Ride With Indy and His Gang
Based on the film — in which Indiana Jones seeks to recapture magical stones from an evil shaman and return them to the village that depends on them — the Temple of Doom provides an action-packed, narrative setting to inspire imaginative play.

In addition to the 37-inch mine track, this set includes a detailed recreation of the movie’s skull altar, two mine carts, booby traps, and plenty of creepy-crawlies. The Temple of Doom comes complete with six mini figures: Indy, his lady-love Willie, his kid sidekick Short Round, the evil shaman Mola Ram, and two menacing temple guards.

In addition, there are plenty of features to keep the set interesting. Just when it seems like Indy is doomed, you can set a trap to derail the temple guards from their evil mission — position a road block, dump rubble, or let loose a snake.

Building the Temple of Doom
With 652 pieces and a colorful instruction booklet, the Temple of Doom took our two adult testers approximately two hours to construct. The process was challenging, but not too difficult with colorful step-by-step illustrations showing the way.

Overall, this set scores an excellent rating for its clever design elements. Encountering snares on their journey down the extra-long track, the runaway mine cars are a huge hit. Other favorite features are the temple’s trap door, the boulder-rigged mine shaft, the chopping sword, and the glow-in-the-dark temple decorations.

One of the best features of this set may be the collection of mini figures, each of which has unique features. Indy comes complete with a removable knapsack and hat, Mola Ram has his signature horned headgear, Willie has long, wavy blond hair, and Short Round is characteristically petite. With such a detailed cast of characters, it’s enjoyable to stage battles between Indy’s crew and the elusive enemies — with clubs, swords, guns, and more.

Our testers enjoyed the way the narrative of this set allowed them to reenact Indy’s quest to capture the magical stones and end Mola Ram’s evil influence. They also appreciated that the storyline is simple enough to make the set entertaining whether or not your child has seen the classic 1984 Indiana Jones movie.
